Cal Nez Joins Safe Harbor Films as Pale Face Production ConsultantSafe Harbor Films, LLC, recently announced a new addition to its family — Cal Nez has accepted a position as Production Consultant for the motion-picture project, Pale Face. Nez's responsibilities will include participation in working along with the producers to facilitate relationships, find locations, and consult in terms of Navajo culture to help ensure accuracy. “We're very excited to have Cal join our family at Safe Harbor Films,” said President Tony A. Angelo. “He has a deep understanding of Navajo culture and spirituality that is essential to the Pale Face movie. Cal's expertise will help us make Pale Face an accurate representation of life in Ramah within a science-fiction storyline.” Nez, a Navajo from the Tachiinii Clan grew up in a hogan on the Navajo Nation in Tocito, New Mexico. He was raised by traditional grandparents who he credits for teaching him self-reliance and business sense by giving him a herd of sheep to tend when he was 12. Nez applied those lessons to his present venture, a graphic design and advertising company, Cal Nez Design. Nez considers himself an artist that works in communications and has been in business for 34 years (one of the longest running Navajo-owned businesses in the nation). Beyond his business acumen, Nez has spent his life learning and expanding his knowledge of Navajo culture and spirituality, even when living outside the Navajo Nation. It is this deeply seeded desire for ensuring that his culture is represented accurately that drew him to accepting a position as Production Consultant for Pale Face. Nez said, “I have known Bill [Kilpack, SHF producing partner and author of Pale Face] for years, and read the book, then asked him: 'So how long have you lived on the rez?' He did a great job in his research, but there were some things here and there that needed some minor tweaking. So we spent time talking about it, then he asked me to join the team because he would be expanding the book for the script. I didn't need to think about it. I just said, 'Absolutely.' I thought it would be a fun experience but, also, a really rare chance to give an accurate depiction of Navajo life and culture in movies.” About Safe Harbor Films, LLC The name of the company, Safe Harbor Films, is not just a catchy turn of phrase: it is a mission, a mantra, a way of doing business, a way of life.
